The UK’s first F-35 Lightning II squadron has marked the centenary of its formation with a parade at Edwards Air Force Base, California.Formed in February 1915, 17(R) Squadron has served with distinction throughout its existence including the Battle of Britain. Today it is the test and evaluation squadron for the RAF and Fleet Air Arm's newest fighter, the fifth generation F-35B Lightning II.The Parade, which composed two flights of RAF and Royal Navy personnel, opened and closed with two flypasts, first a Spitfire, second an F-35B. The Reviewing Officer was Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Andrew Pulford. In a speech to assembled guests, which included representatives from the US Air Force, Navy and Marines, the Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Netherlands Air Force, paid tribute to what he described as one of the oldest and proudest RAF squadrons. The squadron is expected to remain in the United States for the foreseeable future as part of the multi-national Joint Operational Test Team which will test and evaluate the operational capability of the UK's first fifth generation, multi-role stealth combat aircraft.http://www.raf.mod.uk/news/archive/lightning-strikes-100-year-old-squadron-10022015See
