NEW SCRUMMAGE MACHINE FOR RAF LYNEHAM

NEW SCRUMMAGE MACHINE FOR RAF LYNEHAM

A former England International and British & Irish Lion rugby union star recently visited Royal Air Force Lyneham to deliver some training and a new Predator scrummage machine to the RAF Lyneham Lions rugby team.  Purchase of the machine was possible by funds approved by the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust who awarded a grant of £29,500 to buy this, some portable goals and floodlights for the Station.

Nigel Horton played 20 times for England (over 3 decades!) and also 4 times for the Lions on the 1977 tour to New Zealand alongside such legends as Bill Beaumont, Fran Cotton, Phil Bennett, JJ Williams and Sir Ian McGeechan.

Nigel said, "The scrum has always been an important weapon in winning a rugby match. Even backs appreciate a dominant scrum, they might not understand it but they would certainly prefer to play behind a winning scrum than against it. Having worked with the Royal Air Force Lyneham players for ninety minutes on the new Predator scrummage machine, I am confident their scrum will be very competitive next season."

The Royal Air Force Charitable Trust is the parent charity of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises who organise the Royal International Air Tattoo each year at RAF Fairford.  Chris Murray Secretary of the Charitable Trust said "The Trustees are delighted to award this grant to RAF Lyneham, as it meets one of the charity's key objectives - supporting the RAF family."

The Trust is keen to support project-based initiatives, and welcomes applications for grants from charities and organisations that are part of the Royal Air Force family.
