ANOTHER ONE BITES THE CAKE!

Residents of a Fairford care home tucked into a rock star's birthday cake

Residents of a Fairford care home tucked into a rock star's birthday cake after staff from the Royal International Air Tattoo took round the special gift.

The cake had been made for the 62nd birthday of former Queen guitarist Brian May, who was to have celebrated the occasion at the airshow on Sunday (July 19). The rock star was unable to attend, however, and so Deputy Director of Catering Wally Armstrong decided to donate the cake to the residents of Hyperion House in Fairford.

Katie Boyce, Hyperion House Manager, said: "This is a very nice surprise, and it's lovely to have it brought in to us. Only one of our 42 residents had actually heard of Brian – most of them prefer Vera Lynn and Glen Miller, although one of the younger ones likes The Beatles – but we'd like to wish him a belated Happy Birthday, and extend an open invitation to him to call in when he's next in the area, as we always like to see new faces."

Edna Mervyn-Smith, 90, who calls in for lunch every day, said: "I don't know who Brian is, but his cake is lovely. I like classical music, particularly very old music."

The Royal International Air Tattoo is staged annually in support of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust which, in turn, awards grants in support of the RAF family, including serving personnel and Air Cadets. Since it was established in January 2005, the Trustees have awarded over £895,000 to a wide range of projects and initiatives.
