AIR TATTOO HISTORY HITS HEADLINES

Read all about it! This year's Royal International Air Tattoo will be the 30th event to bear the Air Tattoo name. And to mark the occasion, aviation magazine Aircraft Illustrated is publishing a three-part feature entitled Airshow Legends, charting the growth of the air show from the past to the present day.

Based on interviews with Air Tattoo Chief Executive Tim Prince, the three-parter provides an exclusive insight into the challenges that Tim and his late colleague Paul Bowen faced in organising the first Air Tattoo.

Part One, now available in the April edition of Aircraft Illustrated, focuses on the early days of the event when it was based at North Weald in Essex, working with a small team of volunteers and on a tight budget. Behind-the-scenes stories include details of the very first overseas aircraft participants, and the long-lasting friendships formed at the first airshow which continue to this very day.

The next two issues will continue the tale, focusing on the move to Greenham Common in Berkshire, and then to RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, the current home of the Royal International Air Tattoo.
