Air Cadet Rhiannon Enjoys Flight Prize

Published: 19 Aug 2015

An Air Cadet from Devizes has enjoyed her first flight in a microlight aircraft after winning a prize draw at the Royal International Air Tattoo.

Cadet Cpl Rhiannon Owen, 18, who's a member of 2397 (Devizes) Sqn, attended the airshow at RAF Fairford as one of 800 cadets who help to prepare and run the annual three-day event.

She said: "It wasn't a bad way to spend a week! I met Air Cdre Dawn McCafferty, who's Commandant Air Cadets, saw one of the Vulcan's last flights, got signatures from the Red Arrows, sat in the display Typhoon and had a good time with our Recruitment Flight."

To cap it all, Rhiannon entered a prize draw run by Hampshire firm Airbourne Aviation, to win a flight in a microlight, and was delighted to find out she was the winner.

The teenager, who attended Devizes School, travelled to Popham Airfield near Micheldever for her flight, just a few days after winning it, and thoroughly enjoyed her one-hour private lesson with firm director Mac Smith.

Mac's son Greg, who's also involved with the company, said: "Rhiannon turned up with her dad, Michael, who's an ATC officer and I took him on a tour of the flying school while she enjoyed her flight with Mac. She came back with a big grin on her face, and really loved it."

Rhiannon, who's now going to study English and History at the University of Southampton, said: "It was my first flight in a microlight, and it was a great experience. We got to fly over Portsmouth, which was fantastic, and I took the controls for quite a lot of the time, which was great. I didn't expect to win but I'd thoroughly recommend entering prize draws now."

The prize draw raised £373 for the RAF Charitable Trust, the charity that benefits from the proceeds of the Air Tattoo.

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”
