American Air Power in Air Tattoo Show of Strength

Published: 04 Jun 2015

The United States Air Force has confirmed the participation of six additional aircraft to the two announced last week.

It will send types from both of its British bases, RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall, together with assets on deployment from further afield.

Joining the static Bell Boeing CV-22B Osprey announced last week will be a second that will perform a role demo in the flying display. The aircraft, which will be making their UK display debut, are operated from Mildenhall by the 7th Special Operations Squadron, part of the 352nd Special Operations Wing. Previous demonstrations of the tilt-rotor machine at the Air Tattoo have involved US Marine Corps MV-22B variants.

The display of static aircraft at the airshow will be boosted by a KC-135R Stratotanker air-to-air refuelling aircraft of the 351st Air Refueling Squadron, based at RAF Mildenhall.

The 493rd Fighter Squadron from nearby Lakenheath, the 'Grim Reapers', is due to send a pair of F-15C Eagle fighters. These will be joined in the static line-up by two examples of a type once very familiar in British skies, the A-10 Thunderbolt II 'tank-buster'. While no A-10s are now permanently based in Europe, the two A-10Cs taking part in the Air Tattoo will be provided by the 354th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron who are permanently stationed at Davis Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona but are currently deployed to Europe as part of a so-called Theater Security Package under Operation 'Atlantic Resolve'.

Air Tattoo Chief Executive Andy Armstrong said: "our airshow has always enjoyed an excellent relationship with the US military. The support the US Air Force gives us in allowing our show to be staged at RAF Fairford, a USAF stand-by base, is invaluable and gratefully appreciated. I am very pleased that USAF aircraft are once again able to join us in more significant numbers."

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”
