Prize Pupils Collect Design Reward

Published: 14 Jan 2016   updated: 12 Apr 2016

Prize pupils at Eastcombe Primary School have been rewarded for their engineering skills with a cheque for £200 for their school.

On Wednesday (Jan 13), Year 6 pupils Otto and Elliott were delighted to receive the winnings when Amanda Butcher, Director of the RAF Charitable Trust, visited the school to hand over their prize.

The pair represented Eastcombe Primary in the first-ever Junior Engineering Challenge at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) at RAF Fairford in July last year. Competing against 19 teams from 17 other primary schools around the Cotswolds, they were awarded the K'nex Design Challenge trophy and £200 donated by the Charitable Trust.

The Junior Engineering Challenge, organised by the Trust in collaboration with STEM (Science, Technology, Maths and Engineering) Works, asked the engineers of the future to design and build a vehicle to travel 5m in the fastest time, using a propeller or balloon as the means of propulsion, and then undertake a design challenge on the day of the competition.

Otto's mum Ester said: "Otto and Elliott had a fantastic day. The car they raced had been designed and built in school, but they also had to design and build a K'nex model in two hours at the show. The brief was complicated - they had to build an aircraft to drop equipment, in a packing crate and with a release mechanism, safely - and they did really well."

Amanda Butcher, Director of the Trust, said "One of the objectives of the Trust is to encourage air-mindedness in young people, and part of that process is getting them to take an interest from an early age. We have really enjoyed working with the local schools on this project and hope that, as a result, they will be inspired to study science and technology later in their education."

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”
