Canada Makes Heavyweight Airshow Contribution

Published: 01 Jun 2017

The Royal Canadian Air Force is providing a bonus for visitors to this summer's Air Tattoo after announcing that it will be sending a Boeing CC-177 Globemaster III for the static park - with a Boeing CH-147F Chinook helicopter inside its cargo hold.

The C-17 is one of the most capable heavy airlift aircraft in the world, and Canada - which calls the type the CC-177 - has made much use of its capabilities. It purchased an initial four examples, and has since added another one to take its Globemaster III fleet to five.

Deliveries took place between 2007 and 2015. All are in service with 429 Transport Squadron, part of the RCAF's 8 Wing at Canadian Forces Base Trenton, Ontario.

Within days of arriving in Canada, the first CC-177 was pressed into service delivering relief supplies to Jamaica following a devastating hurricane; the five aircraft have since been extremely busy on international missions including support for Canadian forces in Afghanistan, while they also perform many domestic tasks such as delivering military personnel and equipment to sites in Canada's remote far north.

Like the Globemaster III, the CH-47 Chinook helicopter is a mainstay of the transport fleets of numerous air arms around the world. Canada designates it as the CH-147, and first operated the Chinook from 1974-91 - those CH-47C models were sold to the Netherlands. It then bought six CH-147D models from the US Army, with service entry from 2008, followed by 15 new-build CH-147Fs delivered in 2013-14. One of the latter, operated by 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron at Petawawa, Ontario, will be brought to RIAT aboard the CC-177 for a first British show appearance.

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”

Jeremy Clarkson, Television Presenter

“All the thrills, excitement and noise of a Grand Prix, but in the air!”

Jenson Button, Formula 1 Racing Driver

“This is the best airshow!”

Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 Astronaut
