BELGIAN AIR COMPONENT C-130H HERCULES

Lockheed's venerable C-130 Hercules, the prototype of which made its maiden flight in 1954, has attracted many customers amongst European NATO air arms. One of them is Belgium, which acquired a dozen C-130H models for delivery in 1972-73. Of those, 10 of the original examples remain in service with 20 Squadron, part of 15 Wing at Melsbroek, the military part of Brussels Airport. One was lost in an accident in 1996, the other in a hangar fire while on maintenance in 2006. A replacement for the latter, an ex-US Air Force C-130E, arrived during 2009. Belgium's Hercules have supported the country's armed forces and humanitarian operations throughout the world. The fleet has accumulated over 210,000 flying hours since delivery. Replacement will come in the form of the Airbus A400M.
