To provide a lower-cost, smaller offering in the maritime market than its P-8 Poseidon, Boeing has developed its Maritime Surveillance Aircraft (MSA) on the basis of the Bombardier Challenger business jet. It makes use of systems used on board the P-8, but lacks weapons and an anti-submarine capability. A demonstrator aircraft, based on a Challenger 604 and converted by Field Aviation in Toronto, flew in February 2014. The host platform for production examples, which would also be modified by Field, is the Challenger 605 model. The MSA's primary duties are the anti-piracy, coastal and border security and long-range search and rescue roles.
