GERMAN NAVY DORNIER 228

It was perhaps unsurprising that the German-built Dornier 228 twin-turboprop utility aircraft soon found a use with the country's armed forces. The German Navy purchased a small fleet of 228-212LM variants for marine pollution control operations, in which role they supplanted a previous Dornier product, the Do28D-2 Skyservant. In 2012, the existing 228s themselves started to be replaced by examples of the new-build 228NG (New Generation), of which two were procured. The type is now produced at Oberpfaffenhofen, the long-time Dornier factory airfield in Bavaria, by Swiss manufacturer RUAG. Operated by Marinefliegergeschwader 3, they have been converted to carry the side-looking airborne radar, infra-red/ultra-violet scanning equipment and other aspects of the pollution control mission fit.
