JOIN US FOR A MUSICAL JOURNEY
The Royal Air Force bands last visited the region over 10 years ago, and they’ll be back in style on Friday October 17, with a celebration marking the 90th anniversary of the Royal Air Force. The event will feature one of the main bands of the service, augmented by the big-band sound of the Squadronaires plus the Salon Orchestra, a quintet of musicians who provide a stringed element to the programme.
The event, entitled ‘The Royal Air Force in Concert - Past . . . Present . . . Future’, will feature a triumphant finale, reminiscent of the Last Night of the Proms, providing a mix of light classics, jazz, big band and music from the shows to appeal to all ages.
Philippa Hayday-Brown, Special Events Manager at the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises, says: ‘
‘The concert starts at 7.30pm and will provide an uplifting evening with something for everyone. Tickets are available direct from The Sage, costing from £13.50 to £19.50, and they make an ideal gift for someone special, for servicemen past and present, as a group outing, or for the whole family.’
Each year the concert tour tries to take in a new location and, as we haven’t performed in the North East for over 10 years, this seemed a good time to come up and try out this prestigious new venue.

Wing Commander Stuart Stirling will be conducting the programme, and musical highlights will include: Summertime, from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess; Ron Goodwin’s theme from the movie, A Bridge Too Far; the coronation march, Crown Imperial, by Sir William Walton; and Hubert Parry’s hymn Jerusalem, one of the traditional elements of the Last Night.
