Rugby forces go head-to-head

The RAF Police Rugby team (RAFPR) recently travelled to New York to participate in a number of Rugby Sevens high profile fixtures against the New York Police Department and the New York Fire Department.

As well as playing against some of New York's finest, the visit, co-funded by the RAF Charitable Trust (RAFCT), provided the team of 28 with opportunities to participate in coaching sessions with Play Rugby USA - a charity promoting sport for disadvantaged children. The RAFPR team also delivered presentations on the role of the RAF Police to Columbia and New York Metropolitan Universities.

Cpl R Wynn said: "The trip was highly successful on the rugby pitch; however, the abiding memory for the team will be the work that was carried out with Play Rugby USA providing coaching clinics for underprivileged children across the USA. This would not have been possible without the generous help of the Trust.

"We visited schools all over New York including Brooklyn, The Bronx and Harlam to engage with children ranging from four to fourteen which was a very humbling experience with many of the children playing in their school uniform due to having nothing else available to them.

"We were able to pass on our experiences on the rugby field as well as information about careers in the Royal Air Force, focusing on teamwork, pride and discipline. Thanks to the help from the Trust, we were also able to present shirts to each of the children that took part, which theycould use to train with in the future. They proved so popular that one school has adopted them as their team strip and even changed their name to the 'Flying Pigs' - the competing name

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”
