Trust Gives RAF Ski Team The Edge

Published: 26 Oct 2016   updated: 27 Oct 2016

Last month saw members of the RAF Ski Team return from a training camp in southern Chile where they had been honing their speed skills thanks to support from the RAF Charitable Trust.

From their training camp in Corralco, the team practised four disciplines of alpine ski racing: slalom, giant slalom, super giant slalom (or super G) and downhill.

Team member Sqn Ldr Claire Webster, who is based at RAF Brize Norton, said: "It is difficult to train for speed, and this is the case for even the top level skiers. An entire piste needs to be closed off in order to set a course, to ensure recreational skiers do not cross the path.

"South America, and in particular, the Chilean Andes mountain range, is an excellent facility, with quiet slopes that can be reserved entirely for teams, and an incredibly supportive set-up from the locals."

The team, which received a grant of £10,000 from the Trust, comprised Sqn Ldr Bruno Wood (Team Manager); Cpl Gary Smith (Men's Captain); Flt Lt Claire Nixon (Ladies' Captain), Training officer; Sqn Ldr Caitlin Wroe, an RAF GP; Flt Lt Claire Crichton, an RAF physiotherapist; Sqn Ldr Claire Webster an RAF surgeon; Cpl Connor Davies, an aircraft technician and Cpl Jayne McMeakin, from the RAF Police.

Sqn Ldr Webster said: "Ski racing can be challenging with changing weather conditions, however, we were fortunate enough to get perfect conditions with good visibility for the majority of the week. All athletes made dramatic improvements to their skiing, which will be invaluable to the Interservices competitions in Meribel, in which the RAF hope to take back the title of Interservices Champions. We are truly indebted to the Charitable Trust."

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”
