Kart Club steps training up a gear

Published: 30 Jan 2017

Apprentices at Cosford Kart Club are on-track to complete their first go-kart refurbishment project.

The trainee club members are putting their engineering skills to the test following funding from the RAF Charitable Trust, awarded to encourage Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-based learning. The grant, totalling over £5,200, has enabled the club to purchase new engines and a variety of components to help refurbish their fleet of nine corporate go-karts, originally funded by the Trust in 2007.

Flt Lt Liam Perry said: "These karts have been used extensively by thousands of club members and visitors in the last nine years so they are beginning to show their age; however, the replacement engines and components funded by the Trust will give the karts a new lease of life.

"As well as improving the kart performance, undertaking the refurbishment process has given our trainees meaningful experience and an opportunity to develop their skills in leadership, logistical preparation and communication at a professional level, not to mention the sense of achievement from their efforts."

Trustees also approved a subsequent grant to fund replacement helmets for the club, ensuring the safety of its members.

Liam added: "We're really grateful to the Trust for all their support. The addition of fluorescent helmets means we can train our members to look for other drivers while completing the indoor track and get them into the habit of referencing the location of other karts that might be a hazard."

Cosford Kart Club, run by RAF staff and trainee club members, is home to 20 per cent of the No1 School of Technical Training apprentices and is primarily used by young trainees as an affordable introduction to motor sport, as well as weekly corporate team building events.

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”
