Grant gives indoor adventure training a leg up

Published: 30 Mar 2017

RAF Honington has unveiled a new bouldering wall as part of its Climbing Centre, part-funded by the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust.

A £7,000 grant was approved by Trustees to help boost opportunities for personnel at the Suffolk based RAF station to undertake indoor adventure training, with a view to improving a range of personal skills including team work, communication and risk management.

The new facility, which will operate in conjunction with the current climbing wall, requires a lot of physical strength and fitness, and provides social and confidence building opportunities in an environment which creates a high level of perceived risk. The bouldering technique allows climbers to move horizontally across the wall at low levels using hand and foot holds.

Wing Commander Matt Cornish said: "When the climbing wall opened in 2015 and the Climbing Club developed, there was a large increase in interest for the sport, which has become particularly popular among the younger demographic. We have members who compete at a national level and have achieved numerous top three placements at National Championships.

"This new facility will enable beginners to get comfortable with climbing at low levels and those looking for a new challenge to expand their skills and practise new climbing techniques using horizontal movement.

"Most importantly the facility provides an excellent recreational outlet for all ranks to train and socialise together away from work - we hope that the new wall will encourage an increase in membership. There is a recognised need for the Station to provide more infrastructure for non-alcohol leisure opportunities. We would like to thank the Trust for their help in making this viable."

The new bouldering wall will officially open on Tuesday April 4.

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”
