Making its debut in RAF service at this year's Air Tattoo is the Poseidon MPA1. Currently replacing the P-3 Orion in US Navy service and officially the replacement for the Nimrod in the UK, the P-8A Poseidon is a long-range multi-mission maritime aircraft that in particular performs the anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare roles. It is based on the commercial Boeing 737-800 airframe, and Boeing leads the industry team that has developed the aircraft. Prior to the UK ordering 9 aircraft, RAF aircrew flew alongside their US Navy counterparts as part of Project Seedcorn in an effort to maintain core skills in the maritime arena following retirement of the Nimrod fleet.
