A dozen examples of the C295, now an Airbus Defence and Space product (previously part of the EADS CASA range), are in service with the Portuguese Air Force. While seven of the twin-turboprops are standard transport variants, the remaining five are multi-mission maritime aircraft, capable of carrying out a variety of surveillance duties such as coastal patrol, anti-piracy, fisheries and environmental protection, and search and rescue support. The mission systems needed for the MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft) role are in a 'roll-on, roll-off' configuration, enabling the airframe also to be used for transport tasks if so needed, or as a mixture of the two. Several other countries have also adopted the C295 MPA as an affordable yet capable means of meeting their maritime aircraft needs.
