Royal Air Force Tucano T1

The versatility of one of the RAF's training aircraft will be demonstrated at RIAT 2014 in July. The Tucano T1 is operated primarily from No 1 Flying Training School at RAF Linton-on-Ouse, to provide basic fast jet flying training to RAF and Royal Navy student pilots before they progress to the new Hawk T2 at RAF Valley. It is used to instruct students in a full range of skills, including general aircraft handling, formation flying and low-level navigation and, due to its comprehensive avionics and ice-protection packages, can be flown in all types of weather, by day and by night. This year's Tucano display pilot is instructor Flt Lt Dave Kirby, whose specially-painted mount reflects the centenary of the outbreak of World War One and the fundraising efforts of the Royal British Legion.
