Now an Airbus product, the C295 twin-turboprop transport was developed by EADS CASA in Spain as a follow-on to the successful CN235, incorporating new Pratt & Whitney PW127G engines and a stretched fuselage. It first flew in 1997 and entered Spanish Air Force service three years later. Spain now operates a fleet of 18 such aircraft with Ala 35 at Getafe. In total, the air arms of 15 countries now fly the C295, with more to follow. Some have adopted the type for maritime patrol duties, this being one of the 'special mission' variants offered by Airbus. There is also an airborne early warning derivative with a fuselage-mounted, rotating radar dome.
