RAF Viking T1

A total of 100 German-built Grob G103A Twin II Acro gliders was acquired by the RAF for Air Cadet use. This high-performance, aerobatic-capable two-seat sailplane has - as is typical for Grob products - a lightweight glass-fibre airframe, and represented a considerable advance on the older gliders used previously. Ten Volunteer Gliding Squadrons and the Central Gliding School at Syerston currently have the Viking on strength, the type's role being "to train air cadets to a standard that will allow them to fly solo". The recent review of Air Cadet aviation confirmed that "at least 73" Vikings will be returned to flight.
