Textron AirLand has developed the two-seat, twin-engined Scorpion as a low-cost tactical aircraft, with the attack and ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) roles very much in mind. It made its maiden flight on 13 December 2013, and the manufacturer foresees a significant market for such an aircraft in the current fiscal environment. It claims that the aircraft is 'the world's most affordable jet', one suitable for battlefield and homeland security tasks - for example, strike and ISR (in lower-threat areas. Costs are kept down by using technologies developed for Cessna business jets and a modular mission system. The Scorpion made its world public debut at RIAT 2014 and returns for the third consecutive time this year.
