Austrian Air Force Saab 105O

The Saab 105 jet trainer attracted just one customer outside its home nation - the Austrian Air Force. It ordered 40 examples of a variant designated as the 105Ö (Ö for Österreich, or Austria), powered by two General Electric J85 engines instead of the Volvo RM9s as used on the SK 60s of the Swedish Air Force, for whom the type was originally developed. The Austrians use it not only as a trainer but also as a four-seat VIP transport, for air sampling duties and for air defence (especially during major events) against slow-flying targets. Previous roles no longer performed by the fleet are ground attack and reconnaissance.
