Soviet (now Ukrainian) manufacturer Antonov flew its An-28 twin-turboprop utility aircraft in 1969. Since 1978, the high-winged design has been produced exclusively by PZL-Mielec in Poland, and further development since the end of the Iron Curtain has resulted in the M28, a multi-purpose machine making use of Western engines (Pratt & Whitney PT6As), avionics and other equipment. It remains in production. The Polish Navy uses a variant called the M28 Bryza - the name means 'breeze' - as a maritime surveillance aircraft, fitted with a search radar. It has purchased several different sub-variants, of which the most numerous is the Bryza 1R, with seven in service. The aircraft at RIAT 2017 is being provided by the 44th Naval Base at Siemirowice in northern Poland.
