Trustees Support Appeal for Pedal Power

Published: 23 Aug 2016   updated: 24 Aug 2016

One might have been forgiven for thinking there was a chain reaction when the RAF Charitable Trust was approached by RAF personnel on detachment in Oman and Qatar.

Both 901 Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW), a detachment supporting OP SHADER and KIPION at Al Udied in Qatar and 902 EAW, also supporting operations in the region, asked the Trust for a grant towards funding for mountain bikes.

901 EAW's request for 20 bikes and helmets, at a cost of £2,822, was to assist personnel travelling the two miles between the work accommodation and the domestic accommodation and to help boost general fitness.

In its application, 902 EAW asked the Trust to match the Welfare Fund's £1,650 with a grant of £1,822 that would enable the purchase of 10 hybrid bikes and helmets to support the 110 personnel on detachment. A spokesman said: "One of the most successful welfare provisions since the standing up of 902 EAW has been the provision of mountain bikes for individuals or groups to take out on the base for exercise purposes."

Keen to enhance the living conditions and welfare provision for deployed personnel and to help with the impact of the high tempo of operations, Trustees were happy to approve both grants.

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”
