Countryfile Star Beyond Compere

Published: 07 Nov 2016

ONE of BBC television's most iconic figures will take to the stage at The Bridgewater Hall later this month to introduce a thrilling concert celebrating the Best of British Entertainment.

For the first time, the RAF in Concertperformance on Friday, November 18 will be compered by broadcaster John Craven, who himself has been a staple of television entertainment over the past four decades.

John became a household name in the 1970s presenting John Craven's Newsround before joining the Countryfile team in 1989. For 10 years he was also one of the faces of Saturday morning television, first on Swap Shop and then Saturday Superstore, which saw children vote him one of the top 100 people of all time!

John said: "I was delighted to be asked to compere the forthcoming concert in Manchester. In the past I've hosted shows with the BBC Concert Orchestra and even sung in public in Gavin Malone's All-Star Choir, albeit in the background! But this is the first time I have had the honour of introducing the music of a band from the Royal Air Force.

"I've always loved the sound of military bands and have admired their musicianship on many varied occasions. So I'm sharing with our Manchester audience the anticipation of a really exciting evening of great music."

The concert by the Band of the Royal Air Force College will feature some of the most memorable and recognisable tunes that will forever be associated with The Best of British Entertainment from Morecambe & Wise and The Two Ronnies to James Bond and Phantom of the Opera.

Entertainment of a more traditional nature will also feature, including Fantasia on British Sea Songs, O Fortuna from Carmina Burana plus a special Royal tribute to mark the Her Majesty the Queen's 90thbirthday. And it wouldn't be an evening with the Royal Air Force without a selection of rousing British military marches, this year's programme featuring 633 Squadron, Those Magnificent Men and The Dambusters March.

Tickets are priced from £19 - £25. For details and further information, visit or call The Bridgewater Hall Box Office on 0161 907 9000.
