Austrians Reinforce Enduring Friendship

Published: 20 Apr 2017

As one of the handful of international air arms to have taken part in the first ever Air Tattoo, it's particularly welcome news when the Austrian Air Force reinforces its longstanding - and warm - association with our event.

It was to North Weald airfield in 1971 that the Austrian Air Force sent a Sikorsky S-65 helicopter - in response to what proved to be its first invitation to fly abroad. It marked the start of an enduring link between the air arm and the airshow.

This summer will see the Austrians send a solo display by a Saab 105Ö jet trainer, an item last seen at RIAT in 2014. A second aircraft will go on static display.

Both will come from the Düsentrainerstaffel (Jet Trainer Squadron) based at Linz-Hörsching. The sight of the Austrian Saab display will be nostalgic for those who recall the Karo As display team that appeared at several Air Tattoos in the 1970s and '80s.

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”

Jeremy Clarkson, Television Presenter

“All the thrills, excitement and noise of a Grand Prix, but in the air!”

Jenson Button, Former Formula 1 Racing Driver

“Probably the most complete air show I’ve ever been to!”

Al Worden, Apollo 15 Astronaut

“This is THE best airshow!”

Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 Astronaut
