UTV News Anchor Paul Clark to Host Final RAF Centenary Salute

Published: 12 Oct 2018   updated: 18 Oct 2018

One of Northern Ireland's best known faces Paul Clark will be hosting the RAF in Concert - the last opportunity to celebrate the centenary - when it arrives in Belfast on October 23.

Paul is the main news anchor for UTV and has always had a particular passion for military history - one of his programmes examined the strategic importance of the Flying Boat squadrons based on Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, during the Second World War.

Apart from television documentaries, he has travelled with the Army and Royal Marines to places as diverse as Afghanistan, Nevada, and Norway.

In 2013 Paul was honoured by Her Majesty the Queen with the award of an MBE in recognition of his outstanding services to the community, and to broadcasting. He will host the RAF in Concert tour when it reaches the Waterfront in Belfast on Tuesday October 23.

He said: "Presenting this concert is very personal for me. My uncle, Pilot Officer Lester Currie, was a member of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He did not survive the Second World War. He was shot down over the English Channel in 1942. He has no known grave, and is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial. I never knew Uncle Lester. I will never forget him. We owe his generation a debt of gratitude we can never adequately repay - and I hope people will join me at the Waterfront to celebrate the RAF and remember all those who served - and continue to serve today."

From rousing military marches to toe-tapping big band numbers and timeless classical pieces, accomplished musicians from the RAF's principal bands and Salon Orchestra are set to deliver a rousing finale to the first 100 years of the RAF.

The concert will feature classic military tunes including The Dambusters March and Spitfire Fugue and national favourites such as British Grenadiers, Home Sweet Home and Saucy Arethusa, as well as the big band sound of Glenn Miller's In the Mood and Keep 'em Flying.
