The RC-135V/W Rivet Joint is the USAF's standard airborne SIGINT (Signals Intelligence) platform which gathers information by interception of signals, whether between people or involving electronic signals not directly used in communication.
All RC-135s are assigned to Air Combat Command and are operated by the 55th Wing, using various forward deployment locations worldwide.
Three of the aircraft have been bought by the Royal Air Force to replace the Nimrod R1 and will be operated by the RAF under the name of Air Seeker when they enter service in 2014. RAF crews are currently training with their USAF counterparts on 55 Wg.
