Based on the twin-engined Bell 412EP, the Griffin HT1 was procured for use by the tri-service, contractor-operated Defence Helicopter Flying School at RAF Shawbury for advanced helicopter training and the RAF's Search and Rescue Training Unit at RAF Valley. No 60 (Reserve) Squadron flies the DHFS fleet of Griffins, the type being employed to teach students the multi-engined advanced phase of its syllabus - this takes in underslung-load carrying, night vision goggle training, procedural instrument flying, formation flying, low-flying navigation and tactical employment. No 84 Squadron also flies the type in Griffin HAR2 form on search and rescue missions in Cyprus.
