Based on the faithful McDonnell Douglas DC-10 commercial airliner and freighter, the KDC-10 is the Royal Netherlands Air Force's air-to-air refuelling platform and strategic passenger/cargo transport. It has two in service, converted from DC-10s formerly operated by Dutch carrier Martinair; they entered air force service with Eindhoven-based 334 Squadron in 1995. The tri-jets are fitted with the so-called flying boom refuelling system, the on-board operator of which controls the operation remotely from a station behind the cockpit. Circa 1,750 litres of fuel a minute can be transferred from the KDC-10 to the receiver aircraft. As tankers, the KDC-10s have supported Dutch F-16s and coalition aircraft on worldwide operations, while as transports they are generally operated in a passenger/cargo 'combi' configuration.
