RAF Tornado

The mainstay of the RAF's strike force, the Tornado GR.4 is now in its twilight years. However, it continues to be flown by three front-line squadrons - Nos 12(B), IX(B) and 31 from RAF Marham in Norfolk, 41(R) Sqn at RAF Coningsby (Test and Evaluation Squadron) together with the type's operational conversion unit, No XV(R) Squadron, at RAF Lossiemouth in Moray. Able to operate by day or night and in all weathers, the Tornado remains just as relevant, flexible and capable a strike aircraft today as when it entered front-line operational RAF service in 1982. This much has been proved by its involvement in many recent conflicts in the Middle East. Armed with precision-guided weapons and possessing highly advanced reconnaissance sensors, the GR.4 will continue to be part of the RAF's inventory until a planned out-of-service date in 2019. Already confirmed for RIAT 2016 are one No. XV(R) Squadron aircraft and an example from No. 31 Squadron.
