Published: 18 Dec 2018

10 Sixth-form students from across the country have been awarded the prestigious Arkwright Scholarship, run by the Smallpeice Trust, which aims to nurture and inspire the future leaders of the Engineering Profession.
Approximately 300 students a year are awarded the scholarship - each is sponsored by a commercial company, trade association, educational institution, government organisation, charitable trust or personal donor.
In previous years, the RAF Charitable Trust has funded five Arkwright Scholarships, however in celebration of the RAF's centenary, 2018 saw 10 pupils receive a scholarship.
Matthew Begg, Alice Bracher, Oliver Dobson, Henry Free, Niamh Mulley, Christopher Scrivens, Tyler Joe Stewart, Nathan Telford, Dylan Vekaria and Lewis Whybrow each received £2,000 of funding towards courses, travel, expenses and enrichment activities.
The Trust-sponsored Arkwright Scholarship bursaries were first established in 2016 in memory of former Trust Chairman Fred Crawley whose association with the Royal International Air Tattoo and its associated charities, stretched back over three decades.
Director of the RAF Charitable Trust Justine Morton said: "In celebration of the RAF's 100th birthday and its mission to inspire, we felt it was right to award double the number of Arkwright Scholarships.
"The students' desire to develop their engineering knowledge was very encouraging. Hopefully the support and experience that they will gain from their scholarships will inspire them to pursue a career in engineering or aviation in the future".
