Special Air Tattoo Celebrations for RAF100

Published: 06 Jul 2018   updated: 12 Jul 2018

We can now confirm more details of the Air Tattoo's special RAF100 celebrations that will take place at RAF Fairford next week and are delighted that, following its recent arrival in the UK, the Royal Air Force's newest stealth fighter jet, the Lightning II F-35B is scheduled to take part in flypasts on all three days.

Following on from the national celebration for RAF100 in London on 10 July the Air Tattoo is staging the international celebration when air forces from around the world will come together for a 'global salute' to RAF100.

On Friday the Queen's Colour Squadron will parade the newly presented Queen's Colour in front of HRH The Duke of Kent (Patron to the RAF Charitable Trust) and HRH Prince Michael of Kent. This will take place at 10.30am and will be broadcast around the world on our Live Stream service. Sign up HERE.

HRH The Duke of Kent, accompanied by the Chief of the Air Staff will then conduct a Royal Review of Aircraft from the Royal Air Force and Commonwealth Countries, thanking serving personnel and RAF veterans for their service.

HRH Prince Michael of Kent will also carry out a review of aircraft and aircrew that have travelled from around the world to take part in this momentous occasion.

At around 2.15pm on Friday a special flypast featuring around 50 aircraft from the Royal Air Force will provide a stunning aerial celebration to mark RAF100 at the Air Tattoo.

The massed flypast, will see many of the RAF's operational aircraft including the new Lightning, Typhoons, Tornado GR4s, an A400M Atlas, the Red Arrows, plus Puma and Chinook helicopters, accompanied by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) Lancaster, Spitfires and Hurricanes flying in formation.

The Royal Air Force will also stage RAF100 themed flypasts on Saturday and Sunday comprising a diamond nine of RAF Typhoons and a special '617 Squadron Tribute' of BBMF Lancaster, Tornado GR4 and the new Lightning jet.

On the ground, a large area is dedicated to the RAF Centenary, where visitors will be able to see aircraft from the RAF's past, present and future as well as meet those currently serving to learn about the variety of roles they perform in today's RAF.

Air arms from around the world are participating in the Air Tattoo including Canada, Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Finland, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Slovenia and Demark. Joining them will be an historic P-51D Mustang and a state-of-the-art, stealthy USAF F-35A Lightning II that will perform a joint display as part of the US Air Force Heritage Flight.

RAF Charitable Trust Enterprises' Chief Executive Andy Armstrong said: "The Air Tattoo is renowned for staging unique and memorable aerial set pieces to mark special anniversaries. The RAF centenary is extraspecial - so we're delighted that our visitors will see something extra special in the skies above RAF Fairford this summer."
