Sunflower Lanyards - New for 2019
Published: 16 Jul 2019
The Royal International Air Tattoo is trialling sunflower lanyards to assist people with hidden disabilities. The trial enables spectators with hidden disabilities to collect a lanyard which indicates to Air Tattoo Crew members that extra support may be required.
We are hoping to enhance the airshow experience for all spectators with hidden disabilities. This initiative will offer guests the option to pick up a lanyard, which has been purposely designed to act as a discreet sign for Crew members to recognise they may need extra help and support. The scheme helps those with a number of disabilities, such as autism, dementia, visual or hearing impairment.
The Air Tattoo is the first air show to test the initiative and continue to build on its vision to be inclusive with all of its spectators following Gatwick Airport's successful launch, in which over 10,000 lanyards have been given out to date. By using the same sunflower lanyards as Gatwick Airport we hope to encourage other events to follow suit, meaning spectators have the option to wear their lanyard when attending airshows throughout the UK in the knowledge that staff will recognise what it stands for as the unique airshow environment can present challenges for some spectators. The lanyards are a discreet way of bringing hidden disabilities to the attention of those around who can help, which ultimately gives our spectators and their families reassurance and confidence that they will quickly receive the support they need.
If you are wearing the lanyard, the Air Tattoo Crew should recognise it and understand that you have a hidden disability and that you may need a little extra help or time. However, they will not know what your particular disability is, or what challenges and issues you may face. If you have specific requirements, please ask a member of the crew for help.
We are working hard to improve the Air Tattoo experience for all vulnerable adults who may not want to share details of their hidden disabilities. If this applies to you or someone you're travelling with, we can offer you a special sunflower lanyard to wear at the show. To pick up a lanyard please go to the Blue Information Point. Lanyards will be available to collect for free. We will be happy to give you a lanyard, even if you haven't requested one or provide special assistance whilst attending the show.
