Tony Foulds Visits The Air Tattoo

Published: 26 Jul 2019   updated: 05 Aug 2019

On Sunday 21 July the organisers of the Royal International Air Tattoo were pleased to welcome Tony Foulds from Sheffield to his first ever RIAT experience.

Tony became something of a celebrity after his appearance on BBC Breakfast in January. Presenter Dan Walker had spotted Tony tending to a war memorial inside Endcliffe Park. A B-17 Flying Fortress, known as Mi Amigo, crashed in the park in 1944, saving lives in the surrounding housing estates. After find out more about Tony's decades of looking after the memorial, Dan Walker launched a social media campaign to organise a fly-past for the 75th anniversary of the crash that claimed the lives of 10 airmen.

On 22 February, aircraft from the Royal Air Force (RAF) and United States Air Force (USAF) flew over Endcliffe Park, broadcast live on BBC Breakfast. The flypast saw Typhoons, a KC-135R, CV-22B Osprey and F-15s.

Tony was accompanied by two friends to RIAT 2019 and spent the day watching aircraft from around the world perform over RAF Fairford. Tony also bumped into old friends from the USAF, sat inside a B-52 and KC-135 and also saw the final UK performance of the Red Arrows.

Tony also bumped into one USAF servicewoman (below) who was selling T-shirts commemorating the ten crew members killed in that B-17 crash. She had hoped that Tony might be at the Air Tattoo and was ecstatic to see him. The pair spent time exchanging stories and, of course, Tony did leave with a T-shirt.
