Trust Funding Provides Club With 'Bikes For Life'

Two new Honda motorcycles, purchased following a RAF Charitable Trust (RAFCT) grant, have ensured that Bondu Rats are geared up for life.

The Bondu Rats Motorcycle Club (BRMCC) is known far and wide by the Cypriot community for providing support and help around the island, as well as delivering a safe learning environment for biking enthusiasts.

Recognising the poor condition of the 125cc motorcycles being used by the club, RAFCT Trustees approved a £3,700 grant to purchase two new Honda CB125Fs - a versatile new model trusted and recommended for training.

Cpl Paul Weston, the Vice President of the club said: "On behalf of all the members at Bondu Rats I'd like to thank the Trust for enabling us to purchase two reliable motorcycles that will not only improve rider safety, but that are easy to maintain with readily available parts, making them a 'bike for life'."

Ensuring that members have the knowledge and experience to ride safely on the roads is the primary function of the club. SAC(T) Joshua Hughes, the President of the club explained: "Having suitable motorcycles that we can rely on week-on-week is integral to our whole operation and without this funding the club may have no longer been feasible as the motorcycles we were using have become rundown with few available spares - they will soon be unsafe to use. Although we have committee members who regularly fix the bikes to prevent future riders from missing out, this is not a practical long-term solution so the new bikes were essential."

The BRMCC, based at Ayios Nikolaos, is available to all serving personnel, providing the use of bikes, training and instruction in a safe environment away from the risks presented by other road users. Of its current members, seven have recently gained their full licences and a further 11 are training.

Not only does the club facilitate training to benefit personnel but it also extends the use of its riders' expertise to provide aid to the local community and every year the BRMCC takes part in a 500km endurance ride, known as the Cyprus Cycle Challenge, providing support riders for cyclists.

Cpl Weston added: "Every member who passes their motorcycle exam then chooses to take on an active role within the club to promote safe riding. Once they have a good understanding and foundation, we aim to take them on off-roading and track days to further increase their bike control and confidence. Our main aim is to increase knowledge and skills in order to ride confidently and safely and with a view to forming a team for RAF Motorsports."

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”
