Top-up Joy for Highflying JRs

Published: 14 Nov 2017

Ten scholars who have been learning to fly through the Junior Rank Pilot Scholarship Scheme (JRPSS) have secured top-up grants that will help them towards their private pilot's licence.

The grants, totalling £24,000, have been funded by the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust (RAFCT) and are on top of the £78,000 awarded by the charity to the RAF Flying Clubs' Association in 2017 to support 30 Junior Ranks through the JRPSS scheme.

Since the scheme began three years ago, 70 members of the Junior Ranks have benefitted from the important leadership and personal development that the discipline of learning to fly promotes in young people.

The successful 2017 top-up scheme candidates are: SAC(T) Kieran Bye, RAF Benson; SAC Jack Holden, RAF Lossiemouth; Cpl Sam Ingall, RAF Akrotiri; SAC George Jobbins, BUAS Colerne; SAC Arjunan Kugathasan, RAF Northolt; Cpl Laura Macleod, DMS Whittington; SAC Mark Middleton, RAF Brize Norton;  Cpl Lauren Tidy, RAF Akrotiri; SAC(T) Alistair Webb, RAF Odiham and SAC(T) Daniel Wilson, RAF Leeming.

Each scholar will receive an additional 20 hours of flying training on top of the 15 hours they will have completed as part of the JRPSS scheme. They will also be required to take an additional eight ground examinations, a radio telephony practical test and a flying test.

JRPSS project Officer Sqn Ldr Chris Hives said competition for the top-up grants was fierce and the standard of the applications was high.

RAFCT Director Justine Morton said: "JRPSS is one of the Trust's flagship initiatives and it continues to make a huge impact on the lives of Junior Ranks both in the UK and abroad. The top-up scheme offers scholars an extra boost to go on and achieve their Light Aircraft Pilot Licence which helps towards their personal and professional development."
