Go-Faster Grant Aid For RAF Skiers

Published: 31 Jul 2015

Some of the fastest service personnel on skis turned up in Techno Zone at the Royal International Air Tattoo to say thank you to the RAF Charitable Trust for helping them speed past the opposition.

Three members of the RAF Ski Team - Flt Lt Nathan Jones from 10 Sqn Brize Norton, Cpl Gary 'Smithy' Smith from RAF Halton, and Bruno Wood, Reservist with 609 Sqn - met Trustee Martin Hine at the airshow to say thanks and to show off some of their high-tech skiing gear to visitors to the event.
Nathan said: "We've been running our ski team for four years now and realised that, at the Inter-Services Championships, we were getting outskied in the speed events all the time.  We decided the best way to get ahead was to try out a high performance speed training camp in Chile, and it worked - at the 2014 Championships the men's team finished top overall, and this year we've swept the board for men's and women's team and individual titles!"

He added: "We asked the Charitable Trust for a £10,000 grant and they provided the funding.  The injection of this sponsorship has meant that the Ski Team has opened the sport to all ranks within the RAF: with junior ranks now being able to take part, and turning out to be some of our top skiers, we now have a solid foundation for the future.

"This money will help offset the personal contribution athletes have to make to attending the camp, and will especially benefit the junior ranks. We're very grateful to the Trust that the funding will help continue this Southern hemisphere training so we can keep on winning."
