Trust Steps In To Sort Out Another Fine Mess

Published: 29 Jun 2015   updated: 02 Jul 2015

When Warrant Officer Ken Callaghan first stepped into the Sergeants' and Warrant Officers' Mess at RAF Boulmer in November 2013, his first impression was of a museum, shabby in both furniture and decor.

As Chairman of the Mess Committee (CMC), however, Ken was determined to see an improvement, and he started a small project to upgrade the bar and furniture. The committee eventually secured Local Initiative Grant (LIG) funding and a grant from the RAF Charitable Trust for £4,000, largely due to Chief Technician Pete Watson's drive and determination. And the refurbishment of the small project, now costing around £44,000, got under way in January 2015.

First the ceiling and lights were torn down and replaced; then walls, woodwork and areas behind the bar were all given a facelift; and finally new pictures were purchased and hung. New furniture for the bar and anteroom was also ordered and delivered, and the new-look bar was formally opened by the Station Commander, Group Captain Mark Coleman, last month.

"This refurbishment would not have succeeded without Charitable Trust funding, and we are very grateful for that," said Ken. "As I retire from service I hope the mess membership enjoys the refurbishment for many years to come."
