Girlguiding to Create STEM Badge Thanks to Funding

Published: 22 Jul 2016

Hundreds of Girl Guides and Brownies took a trip to the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) recently to gain inspiration for a new badge they are creating.

Thanks to funding from the RAF Charitable Trust (RAFCT), the South West Region of the Girl Guiding organisation will introduce a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) badge. Girl Guiding units from around the area attended the airshow's Futures Day to get ideas for activities in line with the new badge.

The STEM subjects traditionally attract fewer women, so the SW region is looking to create a programme of activities that are both fun and appealing to girls but at the same time not too much like school.

For inspiration, the Guides visited the airshow's hugely popular Techno Zone, an area that brings STEM subjects to life through a range of interactive and engaging activities designed to inspire young people.

Jenny Freeth, Executive Manager for Girlguiding South West England, said: "The Trust has been very supportive with the funding and we hope to be able to go to Trustees with some ideas for our badge and activities soon. Around 670 members attended the airshow which is just absolutely fantastic. It's great to be part of this amazingly large international event."

Amanda Butcher, the Trust Director and a Guide leader herself said: "I was really pleased to see the Region's plans to encourage more girls into STEM activities. Giving them a great day out at the Air Tattoo will hopefully inspire more units to have a go at the activities in the new badge and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product and trying it out".
