Cadets Help Out To Repay 'Revitalising' Grant

Published: 10 Aug 2015

What goes around comes around - and Air Cadets from 2496 (Cumbernauld) Squadron in Scotland have gone the extra mile to thank the RAF Charitable Trust for awarding them a grant. They've just undertaken a 700-mile round trip to help out at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.

Back in 2013, the Trust granted £12,000 to the Squadron's project to buy a new minibus, and the vehicle has had a dramatic effect on the Cadets.

Speaking at the Air Tattoo, where the Sqn was helping support the Flying Scholarships for Disabled People (FSDP) presentation, Officer Commanding  2496 Sqn Flight Lieutenant Stevie Cairn said: "I believe we are the first squadron in Scotland to receive such an honour, and an honour it is, as the minibus has completely revitalised our squadron activities and allowed us to go places and do things we haven't been able to do, for years."

The minibus has given the Squadron the ability to serve their community more effectively. It means they can take their mobile flight simulator to a local school where children with special needs can have a go at flying aircraft, and it's also allowed them to help the local council with the creation of a Memorial and Peace Garden, to be opened in time for the commemoration of the end of the First World War in 1918.

Summing up, Flt Lt Cairns says: "To say the minibus has changed everything is an understatement.  The world is now our oyster and we can't thank the Charitable Trust enough."

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”
