Air Tattoo Artwork Flying High

Published: 12 Feb 2015   updated: 13 Feb 2015

The stunning artwork from the Royal International Air Tattoo 2014, signed by pilots and aircrew from around the world, now takes pride of place at The Christie in Manchester.

Over 475 individuals and organisations made worthy requests to receive this unique piece of aviation history created for the Air Tattoo by leading modern aviation artist, David Bent. Helen Webb, Deputy Director Marketing for the Air Tattoo who organised the competition said "We were staggered to receive so many deserving and heartfelt requests offering to provide a home for the 2014 signed Air Tattoo artwork. It just shows the strength and support for the event."

The Teenage And Young Adult Unit at The Christie in Manchester was the successful recipient, nominated by airshow fan, Neil Fox, whose daughter was treated at the hospital, praising the work of the hospital's high performing teams.

David's wife Carole had the original idea to invite aircrews, volunteers and air cadets to add their signatures and squadron patches to create this spectacular one-off piece of artwork. She was delighted by the response of the hundreds of people that she asked to take part in the flight centre during the Air Tattoo.

Helen Webb continued "Our show artwork has to be vibrant and exciting so as to reflect such a dynamic event and David has created an outstanding show poster for a number of years. We are delighted that so many people at The Christie will get to experience such an amazing piece, made even more special by the hundreds of signatures of those who help deliver the event".

Andrew Morton, public relations manager for the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, said: "David Bent's artwork from the 2014 Royal International Air Tattoo features a wonderful depiction of the Red Arrows' jets wearing their 50th season livery. In keeping with the spectacle of a Red Arrows' display, the artwork will hopefully be an inspiring, vivid and colourful addition to The Christie."

All involved in the Air Tattoo are delighted that many people working, being treated or visiting The Christie will have the opportunity to see and to enjoy this unique artwork. Thanks are also due to Chromatic Arts (Swindon) for donating the framing.
