FRIAT Members Enjoy Fab Photo Day

Published: 18 Jul 2015   updated: 29 Jul 2015

Two members of the Friends of the Royal International Air Tattoo (FRIAT) enjoyed a unique preview of the three-day airshow at RAF Fairford when they spent a day shadowing two members of the event's team of elite aviation photographers.

Aviation fans Richard Chappell from Chippenham and David Johnson from Rugby entered a prize draw organised by FRIAT, and both were delighted to hear they'd won a day with top photographers Jamie Hunter and Richard Cooper.

Richard first attended RIAT at Greenham Common and has now notched up 10 shows, taking pictures with his Canon 1-DX. David's first Air Tattoo was at Cottesmore in 2000: he currently uses a Nikon D-700 for aviation shots.

The two started out at Park & View West, then moved on to the display jet area before heading to the edge of the runway, just in time to capture the Vulcan touching down.

Richard said: "It was great to get such access: ordinarily you wouldn't be able to get shots of the pilots getting out, and it was very interesting to be up close and to watch the procedure. To get the shot of the Vulcan coming in was brilliant, and it was also fascinating to meet all the members of the photographic team."

David added: "Jamie and Rich were great - really friendly and obliging - and for me, the best bit was getting to watch the two Finnish F-18s being decrewed: to have such close access was really unique. I'd forgotten I'd entered the prize draw so to get an email saying I'd won the day was a great surprise."

And Richard added: "When I heard I'd won I sent an email back to say thanks, and that the news had put a big smile on my face. I'm still smiling."

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”
