Air Tattoo 2016 Artwork Unveiled

Published: 04 Feb 2016   updated: 12 Apr 2016

We are delighted to launch the 2016 Air Tattoo show artwork and introduce our new artist, Wiek Luijken. The Air Tattoo commissions a new piece of artwork each year and previously renowned aviation artists such as Wilf Hardy, Philip Castle and David Bent have created some iconic images.

Head of Marketing Helen Webb commented, "Each of our show artists has had a very distinct and individual style and it is important we continue this strong tradition. We approached Wiek as we liked his interpretation and style in terms of classic aircraft and thought this could transfer well to modern military and our 'Next Generation' theme for 2016.  We absolutely love the artwork and it will look good on all the mediums we use it, from tiny web banners through to giant roadside posters!

Wiek has been creating aviation art for big print, calendars, book and model box covers, game illustrations and magazine articles for over 20 years. He works full-time as an Art Director in the games industry and uses aviation art as a creative outlet in his spare time. Wiek also has a passion for classic aircraft, with a special interest in British and Dutch historic military aviation. Born in the Netherlands, he moved to Britain over a decade ago where he is now living within a stone's throw of the airfield that was once the home base for 320 (Netherlands) Squadron!

Wiek was delighted when he was asked to create the illustration to promote the 2016 Air Tattoo: "It is such an honour to create artwork for an event such as the Air Tattoo, one of the world's greatest airshows! At the same time, the challenge of stepping in the footsteps of an aviation art legend like Wilf Hardy was slightly terrifying. With this image I have tried to give an homage to the style of former Air Tattoo posters but with my own twist. It gave me an opportunity to step outside my comfort zone of more classical aircraft and work on a much more futuristic image, featuring the A400M and the F35. The A400M at last year's show blew me away with a stunning display, giving the fast jets a run for their money. I couldn't help but put in the Red Arrows as well, they never cease to amaze with a vibrant display of British colours and are always a highlight of the show. It has been an absolute blast creating this artwork!"

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”

Jeremy Clarkson, Television Presenter

“All the thrills, excitement and noise of a Grand Prix, but in the air!”

Jenson Button, Formula 1 Racing Driver

“This is the best airshow!”

Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 Astronaut
