RAF Unveils Air Tattoo Flyers

Published: 03 Mar 2016   updated: 12 Apr 2016

Some of the Royal Air Force's most iconic assets - including the world-famous Red Arrows - have confirmed their participation in this summer's Royal International Air Tattoo.

In its second season under the leadership of Sqn Ldr David Montenegro, the nine BAE  Hawk T1/T1A jets that comprise the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team will take to the skies above RAF Fairford in typically thrilling fashion on all three days of the airshow.

The most potent element of present-day UK air power will be demonstrated in dramatic fashion by the Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4, the RAF's front-line, multi-role fighter that has been taking part in recent combat operations. The display pilot will be Flt Lt Mark Long from No 29 (Reserve) Squadron, the Typhoon Operational Conversion Unit, at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

Returning to the display circuit after three years is the twin-turboprop Beech King Air, used by the RAF for advanced multi-engine pilot training. Surprisingly sprightly for such an aircraft, the King Air is flown by a crew from No 45 (Reserve) Squadron stationed at RAF Cranwell, the Lincolnshire home of the RAF College.

Adding a touch of nostalgia will be the Avro Lancaster, Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire of the RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Always eagerly anticipated, the sight and sound of these legendary aircraft in flight provide a dramatic contrast to their more modern counterparts in the flying display.

In the RAF Village, one of the Air Tattoo's most popular Showground attractions, there will be the opportunity to meet the Red Arrows, who'll be signing autographs on all three days. The RAF Village will also feature a wide variety of RAF units, with personnel on hand to give first-hand accounts of their roles.

“It was an epic spectacle, as magical as anything you've ever seen in the West End, and as loud as anything you've ever heard at Knebworth.”

Jeremy Clarkson, Television Presenter

“All the thrills, excitement and noise of a Grand Prix, but in the air!”

Jenson Button, Formula 1 Racing Driver

“This is the best airshow!”

Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 Astronaut
