About the Artist
As the founder of the VC Gallery, Barry – an army veteran – is well versed in supporting others to be inspired. Based in Pembrokeshire, the VC Gallery works with veterans and the community to combat loneliness and isolation through engagement and creative expression. The charity was originally set up to help members of the armed forces and veterans cope with the issues arising from time spent in war zones and soon became apparent that what was being achieved could also be extended to the wider community.
“I believe art and culture can improve healing, wellbeing and overall quality of life” said Barry. “The VC Gallery supports veterans from all services and we are keen to attract more people from the RAF community to be part of this.”

In addition to the VC Gallery, Barry is a well-known artist specialising in the abstract. His work expresses stories, memories, demons, and the harsh and sometimes brutal truth and the beauty of a conflicted world. His work can be found at: barryjohnartist.com
Barry said:
It was a huge honour to be able to create these artworks for MBDA and I always relish the challenges a new commission brings to my art practise. Working from a brief and then having creative control for parts of the delivery is very important to an artist and for me a graffiti artist. I use a multi material approach, base of acrylic, gold leaf, inks, charcoal with metallic acrylic and spray paints for form a voice on canvas. The process takes hours and days of layering and mark making with my theme and overall plan of action. Through the dramatic use of neon to the clear blue my phonetic style has a purpose in these one-off pieces.”
