Royal International Air Tattoo Chief Executive Paul Atherton OBE has announced he is set to retire after this year’s show.
After being appointed to the role at the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises (RAFCTE), which organises the world-renowned aviation event, in 2019, Paul has enjoyed a highly successful tenure.
During that time Paul navigated the event through two cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 before seeing it return and sell out in 2022.
Reflecting on his time at the event, Paul said: “It has been a privilege to be at the helm of such an iconic event.
“I’m extremely proud of the work myself and the team have done over the last six years and look forward to keeping up with its progress for many years to come.
“I’d like to thank all of our supporters, volunteers and most importantly our visitors, as they make our event, which we are so proud of, truly unique.”
This year’s show will be highlight the role of aviation in surveillance, reconnaissance, search and rescue and more under the theme of ‘Eyes in the Skies’ – 2025 also marks 40 years since the Air Tattoo first moved to RAF Fairford.
RAFCTE have also confirmed the successful appointment of Paul’s successor, with Gavin Gager stepping into the role in August.
Gavin has been part of the senior leadership team at RAFCTE since 2021 when he joined as Finance Director and has been a driver of change within the business, with a focus on the customer experience, overseeing the expansion of Techno Zone and implementation of digital screens across the site.
“I’m truly honoured to assume the role of CEO at the Royal International Air Tattoo. With a history spanning more than five decades.
“I look forward to working with our committed team and talented volunteers to build on our achievements and discover new ways to make RIAT a more engaging and immersive experience for families.”
