Antonov An-74T Coaler
Developed from the Antonov An-72, the An-74 first flew in 1983 and was given the NATO reporting name of ‘Coaler’. Visually similar to the earlier An-72, with its unusually high-mounted engines on the wings, the An-74 differs through the installation of a more powerful radar, more advanced equipment, longer range and the ability to be fitted with skis. Both types were nicknamed the ‘Cheburashka’ by the Soviets in reference to the large high-mounted engines looking like the large ears of a favourite children’s cartoon of the time. The An-74 excels in transporting cargo and passengers to unprepared airstrips that are too short for most other jet transports to operate from.
The Egyptian Air Force operate a fleet of three An-74s fitted with glass cockpits as tactical transports. Originally a larger fleet was planned but for various reasons, options for additional aircraft were not exercised. All three aircraft are operated by an independent flight attached to the 533 Air Wing based at Cairo International Airport.
The An-74 Coaler is an extremely rare aircraft, and we are extremely pleased to announce that the Egyptian Air Force will be sending one for static display at RIAT25. This will also be the first time that Egypt have attended the Air Tattoo and they become the 59th nation to have sent aircraft.
