Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy
The Lockheed (now Lockheed Martin) C-5 Galaxy is the largest military transport developed by a NATO nation. With a cargo hold that is longer than the entire first powered flight by the Wright Brothers, the Galaxy can carry up to 67,000kg of cargo in one flight which can include up to six AH-64 Apache attack helicopters. In addition to the standard version of the C-5 which has recently been upgraded to C-5M Super Galaxy status, the USAF also operate a pair of specialised versions converted to carry bulky cargo such as large satellites, these were designated as the C-5C.
The USAF first took delivery of the first C-5A in 1969 following completion of the development program. In all, the USAF took delivery of 131 Galaxies between 1969 and 1989, and they became a regular sight in the skies above Europe providing a vital air bridge with the USA for supplies and equipment. Today seven bases operate the C-5M in the strategic airlift role alongside the C-17 Globemaster III.
Making a welcome return to the Air Tattoo, the 439th Airlift Wing from Westover AFRB in Massachusetts will be sending a single C-5M Super Galaxy for the static display at RIAT25.
